John Carter plot

"Lost in our world, found in another."

War-weary of fighting in the American Civil War, former Army Captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) tries his luck as a prospector. During a chase by Indians, he seeks protection in a cave. Something strange takes place there, as his body is inexplicably transferred to the planet Mars, where he finds himself in a war of epic proportions between the inhabitants of the planet, which they call Barsoom. That world, inhabited by the strangest of creatures, is on the verge of collapse. Carter realizes that only he can bring salvation, and that the fate of the planet's inhabitants rests in his hands. His encounter with the breathtakingly beautiful Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins) is an incentive to work to save Barsoom.

We had read the pieces about this film beforehand and boy, if we had based our opinion on whether or not to watch it, it would probably have been a "don't watch" judgment. There were bits in it that are questionable if they should have been in it but overall a decent movie and we don't regret it! The film is mainly set on Mars (the Martians call it Barsoom) and so little on the home planet. Maybe that's why it was a hit for us. We do like to see a strange environment, an environment where we will never come ourselves.

The story usually runs like a train, there is plenty of action, shots are nicely made and the players also deliver capable work. Of course in collaboration with director Andrew Stanton, who is known for

Finding Nemo (2003) and WALL E (2008). Presumably that also ensured that he received the large amount of money for this film. Too bad that this "John Carter" has failed financially!

Our rating for this film is a 7!

Addition: might be interesting for those who want to know something about life (in the past) on Mars:

Visually, the film has come out quite well, although a quarter of a billion may also yield something. The fact is nice: an American ends up on Mars from the American Civil War through a mysterious connection and ends up in another war there. The fact that Mars is very different from that planet that we know is something you may consider under poetic freedom. What it lacks in the film is capable actors and above all a decent story. Because what is poorly acted and what is boring and predictable. It might still be interesting for children, but I dropped it after more than an hour; so no stars.

Bad.

In terms of atmosphere, the viewer is presented with a mishmash of Star Wars, World of Warcraft and the like. There is no shortage of strange creatures, nor of different locations. The film has a fast pace, partly because of this variety.

It's just all very messy. Narrative, it doesn't come out at all. I see very little streamlining in what is being said. With two scruffy protagonists, it's easy to mop with the tap. The tone is deadly serious, while it should have just been a lot of adventurous nonsense..

1,5
