Boléro plot

"The Ravel Mystery"

'Boléro' tells the story of the birth of the most celebrated work by the French composer Maurice Ravel. This biopic follows choreographer Ida Rubinstein who, in the 1920s, selects Ravel to compose the music for her next ballet. She wants something daring and sensual. When Ravel can't seem to put anything down on paper, he delves back into his past. Reliving his memories of old lovers and painful failures helps him create his greatest success: the Boléro.

Biographical drama about the French-born musician and composer Maurice Ravel [Raphaël Perzonnaz], the man responsible for 'Boléro', one of the most popular pieces of music of the 20th century, which has been adapted in countless adaptations (and musical genres) since its appearance in 1928. was recorded and performed. “A one-minute melody that repeats itself 17 times and ends in a catastrophe. Just like life,” is how Ravel describes the piece that he eventually wrote in two weeks after a writer's degree as a ballet for diva Ida Rubinstein [Jeanne Balibar]. Ravel is an extremely complex person: cold, distant and difficult to understand. Personnaz is brilliant in the leading role, but Fontaine requires a lot of patience from the viewer. Flashbacks explain Ravel's personality and the strong supporting cast (with Balibar as a standout) helps maintain attention. In the second half, in which Ravel becomes more open to 'life', Christophe Beaucarne's cinematography moves with the personality. A carefully constructed drama and a tribute to an acknowledged musical genius, even though the two scenes in which part of 'Boléro' is performed are musical and cinematic feats. The final scene is unforgettable, so don't hesitate to take time to catch your breath during the end credits.
