Great gripping movie. The fact that it's true always makes it that little bit better for me.

There has not been a moment that I couldn't keep my attention and every now and then I had to shed a tear.

Trial by Fire is another very strong work by Edward Zwick. Why this film doesn't get more attention is a mystery to me because it might be the highlight of recent months for me in terms of recent films. Although it is quite difficult to show the human side of criminals, Zwick succeeds very well. Of course if there's any injustice involved it's a different matter, but in this movie everything points in the direction of Todd Willingham.

The film certainly has moments where you get the lump in your throat and have to swallow for a while. Kudos also to Jack 'O Connell who, in my opinion, had faded into the background a bit more after Unbroken and a few earlier films. I do see that I skipped some of his films. Laura Dern also plays well here. When I saw Wild At Heart I didn't like her at all, but in the meantime I've learned to appreciate her.

An absolute must! 4.5*

Cameron Todd Willingham [Jack O'Connell] was definitely not Father/Husband of the Year as he watched helplessly as the house with his three very young daughters burned down. He had no job, squandered the money his wife [Emily Meade] earned on booze, and marital squabbles regularly turned into scuffles. After Todd is sentenced to death, he seems to be the last to believe in his innocence. Until he comes into contact with playwright Elizabeth Gilbert [Laura Dern] through a penpal program. After a few exchanges of letters, she decides to meet Todd and soon she believes he is the victim of a biased police investigation. She decides to use any means to get a stay of execution and have the case reopened. O'Connell's transformation from a rudderless drunk into a quiet, articulate man is compelling, and Dern (as always) is outstanding in this sorrowful true story based on the letters Cameron wrote.
