No, it is not a documentary, but the fact that father and son Scholten van Aschat address each other by their real names and that their background as actors is also incorporated, adds an extra dimension of realism. Clashing personalities and perspectives on coping with grief are played out against a beautiful but merciless Swiss landscape. Peaks and valleys. Literally and figuratively. Excellent acting and beautiful photography invite self-reflection.

In the Swiss mountains, Gijs [Gijs Scholten van Aschat] visits his son Rein [Reinout Scholten van Aschat] for the first time since his wife's funeral. An awkward encounter that makes you wonder why Gijs doesn't return home immediately. Instead, he lets himself be persuaded to go on a hike to a mountain top with a group of Rein's friends to go downhill on skis or snowboards. During that hike, the father/son relationship is put in a new light. Gijs is a pushy alpha male, Rein someone who, for unclear reasons, still doesn't set clear boundaries. Their relationship is more like two pubescent brothers than adults and that makes it difficult to muster up sympathy for them despite the good acting of father and son. Van Ewijk compensates with a few impressive action sequences and beautiful images of the snow-capped Alpine peaks by Douwe Hennink.

I usually avoid Dutch films a bit because the Netherlands is not a big film country (Belgium maybe) so I find it a strange kind of patriotism to visit them, but the trailer appealed to me so I decided to want to see the film. And I was not disappointed: the film is intelligent and interesting throughout. The film is somewhat of a survival adventure in the mountains, but at least as exciting and certainly more important is the psychological tension between father and son, whose mutual irritations seem to discharge into a battle for life and death in which the film manages to remain both surprising and credible. In addition, the film is masterfully filmed and edited, making both the majestic, inhospitable nature of the mountain landscape and the emotions and psychological struggle almost palpably visible, for which the medium of film is eminently suited. In short, I think it is a very good film that would not have been out of place as a Dutch entry for the Oscars.
