Beautiful images, nice soundtrack but too much and also rather uninteresting dialogues. The characters didn't really appeal to me either. The images of Hiroshima from 1945 but also those from 1959, on the other hand, are impressive and interesting. The completely destroyed city after the atomic bomb attack was quickly rebuilt, although not much is left of Hiroshima in 1959 if we have to compare that with the images of today. The depressive sounding soundtrack did fit well in this not exactly cheerful film.

In brief:

This debut by Resnais is certainly not a bad film, but it does not come even remotely close to his second film, the wonderful "L' Année Dernière a Marienbad", for me still one of the most beautiful films in the history of cinema .

3.5* after revision

No, Alan Resnais is always a laugh. In 'Nuit & Brouillard' he showed images of the concentration camps and in 'Hiroshima, Mon Amour' you get to see the destruction, injuries, deformities and corpses after the atomic bomb. All this punctuated with an equally cheerful story of a loving couple who part from each other, whose woman as a collaborator carries the necessary war traumas with her. Marguerite Duras wrote the beautiful screenplay.

In a few days I finished my second from Resnais after L'Année Dernière à Marienbad (1961). The other 21 films here on MM are less known, with his most quoted only having 58 votes. With Hiroshima MON amour, Resnais delivers another special film. The events of Hiroshima are in any case an emotional historical theme and Resnais links love to it.

The film alternates between images from the past, images about Hiroshima and the dialogues between a cup. Emotion and depth are central here and it is especially Riva who gives the best of herself and comes to the fore in the film even more than Okada.

The film is an aesthetic poetic experience of the horrors of the attack on Hiroshima and the traumatic experiences the survivors and relatives endured and, by extension, the traumas sustained by the war tout court. Love is paradoxical and the woman fears that she will forget her old love by starting a new one. Nice film by Resnais, although I wasn't always following it attentively. Strong, but there's something wrong with making it a masterpiece for me, only I can't put my finger on the wound...
