Le Scaphandre et le Papillon plot

"Let your imagination set you free."

On December 8, 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby, journalist at the French Elle and only 43 years old, suffered a stroke. He went into a coma and when he regained consciousness he was found to be paralyzed all over, except for one eye. The film tells of these true events and how Bauby was locked in his dysfunctional body. His one working eye became his only connection to the outside world, simply by blinking once for 'yes' and twice for 'no'.

Reminded me of the movie "La Chambre des Officiers" and somewhat also of "Mar Adentro", but a little less painfully painful.

Excellent film, originally conceived, sometimes moving but never with false sentimentality. The curious, articulated reactions of the main character are very realistic. Also the imaging. Amalric is of course a very special actor and Patrick Chesnais is also a class act, while Marie-José Croze will often be appreciated.

A moving film about a man who suddenly becomes paralyzed after a stroke. A situation you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. Dementia is one thing, but being fully aware of your dependence must be hell. The film starts very strongly with the many uncomfortable situations in which Jean-Do finds himself. He needs help for literally everything: from the basic necessities to the banal things like an annoying fly or the wrong TV program.

The film reinforces the condition by putting the finger on the wound with excellent camera work. The voice-over also created that involved feeling. As I read above, the film is emotionally strong, but the film never balances on the negative sensational side. Everything remains very serene and genuine. The contacts with his children were heartbreaking, almost inhumane. Attention was also paid to the psychological suffering of the patient. Interesting to dwell on the idea that Sundays were the worst and boredom turned out to be your worst enemy when most of the staff weren't working.

Deep admiration for the man who still managed to “write” a book, of course with the help of (also chapeau to them for all the hours and the patience it took). A film to dwell on or to become silent. Beautiful!

An intense and sad story, but not too intense or too emotional. It even has a comedic tone at times. I think the effect is well done. In this way you feel more involved and 'present', and you get a better understanding of the situation Jean-Dominique finds herself in. The acting is also good. I'm glad I found these at the thrift store. Beautiful, strong and moving. 4*
