Sober, compelling story about asylum seekers who calmly await the decision on their status on a remote island. A film full of symbolism, such as the seemingly endless and deserted country road that seems to lead nowhere. Writer/director Ben Sharrock regularly intersperses his film about hopelessness, lethargy and ultimately something like hope with hilarious intermezzos. Amir El-Masry (and his almost inseparable oud) deliver a strong acting performance. A beautiful film about the other side of the global migration problem.

Inhuman boredom. Sometimes you come across a film that seems to be made for you personally. For me, 'Limbo' (2020) has just that perfect mix of surrealism, dry humor, Scottish natural beauty and social criticism. The young Syrian Omar (Amir El Masry) is trapped in the purgatory of asylum status. On the one hand, he is tormented by high expectations from home and acquired traumas, but on the other hand, well-meaning Scots continue to see him as an outsider. Omar waits and waits and waits...and waits. Only his faithful Oud (an oriental string instrument) reminds him of the person he was and who he might become again. When the waiting is over. Someday.
