The Queen plot

"Our Leaders. Ourselves."

A representation of the frequent contacts that Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Tony Blair had with each other after the death of Princess Diana. The main topic was the balance to be struck between the part that was a private matter for the royal family and the public's call for a public mourning ceremony.

And remember, it's "Ma'am" as in "ham", not "Ma'am" as in "farm".

I was quite curious given my unparalleled respect for Queen Elizabeth II who has now ruled the throne and thus the British government for over 60 years.

The similarities to Helen Mirren are there and no one else could have done this.

The film is not a standard biopic but actually focuses on a few tumultuous months in the royal family, the period when Princess Diana died in a car accident.

The queen is a symbol of hope in these difficult times for both the family and the people, but the queen also has emotions that she can hardly hide.

I had my doubts about how the Queen was portrayed, not at all like the gruff old-fashioned woman she is, Mirren brought a little too much energy to the screen making her seem more cheerful as ever, yet Mirren was the right choice and James Cromwell was a fine Prince Phillip.

Film with an underlying message that couldn't be told better.

Not bad, especially because of its historical value. The tense atmosphere is palpable, and the dilemmas faced by the royal family and Tony Blair with the death of Diana also come across well. Subtle and modest humor provides the balance and prevents the film from becoming too dry. Seen it before on DVD and awarded 3.5 stars, I'll leave that at this second viewing, although that might be a tad on the generous side.

Beautiful movie. Gives a good look at how things are going in England at the Royals. The supporting characters and the 'real' images complete the film. Nicely placed.
