I remember the first time I saw an Irish horror film (dead meat 2010). It wasn't great but you can see an upward trend. This Frewaka strikes the right uncomfortable tone. I find superstition and madness, if well acted and filmed with a solid story, particularly effective for a truly scary horror film. Frewaka delivers sublimely on these points. Add to that the mysterious Gaelic language and you have an entertaining movie.

However, the pace is sometimes just a bit too slow and the use of mainly a house as a location is both a strength (it creates a claustrophobic feeling and you are somewhat locked in, just like the old woman) and a weakness. All in all, you can say that Irish folk horror has matured in this one as far as I'm concerned.
